Amazon announced the news of 18 new utility wind and solar projects in the United States, Finland, Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom. So far in 2021, the total procurement of these projects has reached 5.6GW. Currently, Amazon has 274 renewable energy projects worldwide.
Amazon is committed to achieving 100% renewable energy power for all the company's business operations by 2025, five years earlier than its original 2030 commitment.
These new utility wind and solar projects make Amazon's total renewable energy power generation commitments exceed 12GW, and the power generation capacity after the project is fully put into operation will reach 33700GWh. These projects will provide renewable energy power to Amazon’s corporate offices, execution centers, and Amazon Web Services data centers. These facilities will support Amazon’s millions of customers worldwide. These projects also help Amazon fulfill its commitment to produce clean energy equivalent to the electricity consumption of all consumer Echo electronic touch screen devices.
Kara Hurst, vice president of global sustainability at Amazon, said: "We are taking swift and prudent actions to reduce carbon emissions and respond to the climate crisis." "Investment in renewable energy globally is an important step in fulfilling our climate commitments. We are committed to 2040. Achieve net zero carbon emissions, which is 10 years earlier than the agreement stipulated in the Paris Agreement."
After today’s announcement, Amazon has become the world’s largest corporate buyer of renewable energy. The company has 274 global projects, including 105 utility wind and solar projects, in addition to 169 factory and shop solar roof projects. The new US solar projects announced today include:
-Eight new projects across the United States. Amazon has added more than 1GW of utility solar projects in the United States, including the first solar projects in Arizona and Georgia, in addition to other projects in Ohio, Texas and Virginia. Amazon has developed a total of more than 6GW of renewable energy capacity in the United States through 62 projects.
-The second solar energy project equipped with energy storage. The second solar project with energy storage is located in Arizona. This project can adjust solar power generation when demand is greatest, even when there is no sunlight. This 300MW solar project is equipped with a 150MW battery energy storage system, which brings Amazon's battery energy storage project to 220MW.
