Portugal produced 172.5 GWh of electricity from renewable energy sources on Friday (November 3) and Saturday (November 4). This includes 97.6 GWh of wind power, 68.3 GWh of hydropower and 6.6 GWh of photovoltaic power. After consuming 131.1 GWh of electricity for itself, the remaining electricity will be exported to Spain.
Portugal relied solely on renewable energy sources to meet its electricity needs over the weekend, particularly wind and hydropower. From Friday night to Monday morning, a total of 172.5 GWh of electricity were generated using renewable energy and 131.1 GWh of electricity was consumed.
This includes 97.6 GWh of wind power, 68.3 GWh of hydropower and 6.6 GWh of photovoltaic power, while also exporting surplus power to Spain, taking advantage of favorable weather conditions.
According to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), Portugal has 16,329 MW of installed renewable energy capacity, of which 7,500 MW comes from hydropower, about 5,500 MW from wind energy and about 2,536 MW from photovoltaics.
In August, the Portuguese Ministry of Environment issued 5 GW of grid connection licenses, mainly for photovoltaic projects. All selected projects are expected to be operational by 2030.
