The Iraqi Ministry of electricity recently announced that, starting July 1, it will send 50MW of electricity to Al Anbar Governorate. Once the interconnection is completed, Jordan will provide 1.5 gigawatts of electricity per year to Iraq. In June, during a visit to Eastern Province by Saúde, the Governor of Saudi Arabia, the two sides also launched a grid connection project that will initially transmit a gigawatt of electricity to the Iraqi capital. At the same time, Iraq also signed cooperation agreements with Turkey and other countries to expand electricity imports from relevant countries. Since 2003, Iraq's nominal generating capacity has grown from less than 10 gigawatts to 39.5 gigawatts. However, due to insufficient investment in infrastructure and outdated transmission and distribution networks, only 21GW of 2021 electricity is actually produced and more than 30% of the country's electricity is lost in transmission and distribution. According to the International Monetary Fund, the 2021 has a 10GW power deficit. In particular, the summer peak in electricity consumption, power tension further aggravated, many places have to purchase small diesel generator power generation. It also imports ten billion cubic metres of Iranian gas a year for power generation. The country has the world's fifth-largest proven oil reserves and twelve th largest natural gas reserves. However, due to the lack of relevant technologies, a large amount of associated gas is directly burned in the production of Iraqi oil fields. To improve the supply of electricity, Iraq has focused on improving its natural gas processing capacity. Iraq's central bank has approved a $680 million fund to develop renewable energy, local media reported. In April, Saudi Aramco announced it would build a 1-gigawatt photovoltaic plant in the Najaf region of Iraq. In the 2021, the Iraqi government also signed a framework agreement for the general contracting of 2GW solar projects with China power construction. Iraqi electricity ministry sources said that through a variety of initiatives, Iraq's power generation capacity by 2025 will reach 41 gigawatts, is expected to meet basic electricity needs.
