The Mozambican Energy Regulatory Authority (Aren) has officially announced recently that it has selected French energy company Total Eren to build the Dondo photovoltaic power plant in the central part of the country.

“Among the five bidders pre-qualified under the Renewable Energy Auction Promotion Programme hosted by the Mozambican government, Total Eren presented the best technical and financial advice,” said the Mozambican Energy Regulatory Authority (Aren).

Total Eren The company is part of the French oil company Total Energy, which has multiple shareholders and promotes renewable energy projects around the world. The company is leading a gas exploration project in the Cabo Delgado region in northeastern Mozambique, which had to be put on hold a year ago due to an armed insurgency in the area.

In addition to the photovoltaic power plants, Mozambican authorities are planning to hold tenders for the launch of two other photovoltaic power plants in Lichinga, the capital of the northern Niassa province of the country, and the village of Manje in the central Tete province.

In addition, the Mozambican government plans to launch a tender for a wind farm in Jangamo, the southern province of Inhambane.

Mozambique has more than 2.7 GW of photovoltaic power generation potential, of which 599 MW is ready for grid connection, and its excellent photovoltaic resources provide multiple possibilities for grid connection and rural electrification projects.

In order to be fully connected to the grid without the use of energy storage batteries, the Mozambican government has surveyed and identified 189 photovoltaic project sites with sufficient construction area to install 2.7 GW of photovoltaic power generation equipment near existing substations .

For each substation, and based on the respective short-circuit power, the best locations were finally selected, with a total capacity of more than 599 MW.

Maputo and Tete provinces have the greatest potential for grid-connected PV projects, mainly due to the relatively good transport infrastructure in Mozambique.
