As many as 111 investors from 15 countries have expressed interest in participating in a tender to deploy 1 GWp of solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity in Algeria, the secretary-general of Algeria's Ministry of Energy Transition and Renewable Energy said on Sunday.

Mahama Bouziane said the number of investors is likely to increase further in the coming days as the bidding deadline is extended from April 30 to June 15.

Bouziane confirmed that Algeria is betting on renewable energy, especially solar energy, as an alternative to fossil energy. The project, called Solar 1000, will support the North African country's plan to reach 15GW of green power generation capacity by 2035.

Algeria launched tenders for the 1-GWp scheme at the end of December, with the goal of allocating capacity on plots between 50 MW and 300 MW. As many as 11 sites have been selected for solar power plants.

Each developer can bid on one or more lots with a total capacity of 300 MW. The winner will receive a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA).
