Brazil's electricity sector regulator Aneel announced that in the past July, about 514.63MW of solar and wind power had been added to Brazil's renewable energy basket.
According to data shared by Aneel, the number of new solar projects added last month was 330.51MW, accounting for a very high proportion of renewable energy. The wind power plant generates 184.12MW.
Aneel also said that in one month, Brazil expanded its total power generation by 709MW. Coal-fired power plants accounted for 21% of the total growth. Brazil has also added other clean energy sources. Hydropower (including small power plants) and thermal accounted for the remaining 47.3MW and 145.85MW, respectively.
Aneel said Brazil's total installed capacity at the end of July stood at 184,140.5 MW. Since the beginning of 2022, new capacity from various sources has swelled the Brazilian power system by 3,124MW.
According to the data, more than 83.13% of the total energy comes from sustainable and low-emission energy. Wind energy accounted for 11.95% and solar energy accounted for 2.97%.
Aneel recently announced that Brazil has approved around 5,000MW of wind and solar. Brazil has seen impressive growth in renewable energy in 2021, with more than 7,500MW of new capacity added, an increase of nearly 58% compared to the target set at the beginning of the previous year.
Brazil is one of the most advanced countries in Latin America in the development of renewable energy in the area of tackling the growing challenge of climate change. Recently, global renewable energy company Iberdrola, through its subsidiary Neoenergia, announced the start of construction of the "Luzia" project, the company's first solar power plant project in Brazil with an installed capacity of 149MW.
