Ireland's National Radio recently reported that ESB Networks confirmed that 1 gigawatt of solar photovoltaic power has been connected to the grid, marking a new milestone in Ireland's use of renewable energy. The peak demand of Ireland's electricity system is approximately 5.5 GW, and 1 GW of photovoltaic power generation can power approximately 400,000 households.
Climate Minister Eamon Ryan said photovoltaic power generation applications have accelerated significantly since the launch of the first solar farm in County Wicklow in May 2022, providing farmers with a new source of income, supporting employment and benefiting communities across the country. Ireland is scheduled to reach 8GW of installed solar capacity by 2030 and the current achievement is an important milestone in that journey.
